Day 76: Heart of the Awl (Coeur d’Alene)

Last night Alyssa, our waitress, suggested Brooks hotel for breakfast- we liked it. As we rode around downtown Wallace, I couldn’t help wonder what controversy happened when they built I-90 on an elevated roadway right through their town.

We continued riding on The Trail of the Coeur d’Alene all the way to our destination of Harrison. Apparently in the 1990s this trail was built as “punishment” of sorts for the pollution by the railroads and mining companies. We had a hunch that it was.

Harrison came soon enough and we enjoyed a few beers, a swim and an ice cream in this tiny resort town on the lake. The kids in the lake swim dock laughed at our cannonballs off the diving board.

One little boy at the ice cream store said “I wanna hang out with the funny old guys outside” as his ice cream melted down his arm. We had to laugh. It was a good summer day!

You know you have made it when you’re the funny old guys that the kids want to hang out with. There must be a T-shirt in there somewhere!
