Last of the Coast

A few things I noticed about Portland were a lot of brick buildings and brick sidewalks. Also, cruise ships are a big part of tourism. We heard the cruise ship horns as they were leaving port. The waitress said they get about 50 per year.

We said goodbye to Portland and rode thru the town of Yarmouth. Some of these towns were famous for shipbuilding back in the 1800s and Yarmouth had the biggest paper mill in the world back in 1901.

We spoiled our lunch with an ice cream at Derosierā€™s in Freeport and watched people go thru the giant LL Bean HQ store. Itā€™s a mecca for LL Bean fans. Derosierā€™s also made deli sandwiches and pizza so we ate lunch there too. They started in 1904 and itā€™s still run by the fifth generation family. Impressive!

We continued on the town of Brunswick and camped at Thomas Point Campground. Itā€™s huge and almost empty. They have music festivals here each year.

A Scandinavian store near breakfast. I didnā€™t realize how similar the flags are
Yarmouth has a few waterfalls which were used in yesteryears paper mill
The locals call people ā€œLeafpeepersā€ that look at the trees
