Land of Maple Syrup and Cheese

The Cross Vermont Trail is not to be taken literally, itā€™s more of a ā€œrouteā€ with parts of it – I would guess 1/3 actual trail. The trail had a closed sign ā€œdue to flood damageā€ but it was super minor and we only had to lift our bikes over one spot.

Steve and I went to the quintessential ā€œvillage storeā€ in the tiny town of Marshfield that you would picture in your mind. Itā€™s 150 years old and has an extreme patina. I read the interesting newsclipping they had on their bulletin board. The owners retired in 2022 and sold it for $700k to 5 of their employees and it became a co-op. Their soft-serve machine was getting routine maintenance so I couldnā€™t get my first maple soft-serve.

We tried to get lodging in Montpelier or Waterbury but most of them are full or overpriced- not sure why. Maybe the ā€œleaf-peepersā€ or some event.

Waterbury was aptly named since it flooded really bad in 1927 so the Army Corps of Engineers built a dam to prevent future floods. It mostly worked.

We ate dinner at Pig-Pro brewery which had a good selection of BBQ meats.

We rode north of town past the dam to our camp at Little River State Park. As we slept, the expected rain happened and we need to figure out how to proceed.
