Day 17: Carlos from Madrid

Billy’s restaurant was our hearty breakfast in Princeton. It was good fuel for some long climbs out of town.

I decided to talk to “Gramps” in the tiny town of Coalmont and learn a little history and pet his friendly dog Luna. Gramps told us the coal mine closed in 1940 and they had a tragic accident in 1929 that killed 40+ men. The hotel looked like it had stories to tell.

Gramp’s wife showed us how her deer proof bird feeder worked. Lower it to load and raise it to let the birds eat.

Tulanemn market was a hub of activity outside of town. By the looks of the signage it was popular for snowmobiling and other winter sports. I decided to help unload truck for their weekly delivery. Ice cream was my treat.

After settling in at Otter Creek campground I noticed a man riding his bike into the campground. We let him join our group in exchange for stories about his hometown of Madrid and his tours thus far at age 27. Great stories and a few photos from his trip riding around all 8 of the Canary Islands and several other adventures. Thanks Carlos for your stories! Maybe we’ll see you at the next campground.
